Proof of Life Challenge

Do you have proof of life in Christ? What does that even look like?

Here's a start...

5 minutes of prayer. 5 minutes in the Word. Record it. Every day for 40 days.

It's deceptively simple. But if you want to grow stronger in your faith and are not daily reading God's Word and talking with Him, this is the best place to start.

"Proof of life" is a practical challenge with the goal of building a simple habit to strengthen your faith every day.

The phrase,"Proof of Life" has been coined by my grandfather. Keeping a Proof of Life journal is among the first things he tells the men that he mentors to do, stating that the Word of God brings the grace of God into our lives.

My Proof of Life Journal    You can get your very own Proof of Life journal here. Or just write it on a blank notebook you already have, like I did.

What should I read?

The Bible. Seriously though, take your pick! You could start a Bible reading program, or just go through one of your favorite books. Pick something you're most likely to stick with.

If you really don’t know where to start, the Gospel of John is a great jumping off point. Wherever you read, the point is that you’re getting in the Word every day and building that habit.

I’d encourage you to do this in the mornings, before even touching your phone for the day. And dying to yourself by getting up 10 minutes earlier may be beneficial. The goal is to start your day off right and build consistency. This is not Bible studying, per se. Simply reading.

What do I pray?

Ask God to bless you in this act of faithfulness and seeking Him.

What if I want to read more?

Go for it!

Why only 10 minutes?

Because 10 minutes is way better than no minutes. And, most importantly, it builds consistency.

What happens if I miss a day?

Oooh... straight to hell.

Seriously though, this challenge is about progress, not perfection. If you didn’t get to it in the morning, shoot to spend that quiet time with the Lord in the evening before bed.

Life happens, but make it a goal to never miss 2 days in a row. If you’re anything like me, it’s really easy to get “thrown off the horse” so to speak. Don’t let that happen. Even if you miss a day, keep pushing.

What if I don’t have time?

You have time.

This commitment is 10 minutes a day. You have time, or you can make time. When you say you don’t have time for something, you’re really saying you don’t value it. You make time for what you value.

Why 40 days?

Ultimately, the goal is to do this every day every day for the rest of your life, until you meet Jesus face to face. But... that's a little daunting.

40 days is just long enough to start building a habit. And it's just a very Biblical number: Jesus was tempted in the wilderness for 40 days, Moses spent 40 days with God on the mountain, it rained for 40 days and nights during the Flood, etc.

A note on legalism:

This challenge is not about “earning” salvation or even favor with God. This is about seeking Him as a response of gratitude for the saving work He’s already done.

If you complete the challenge, I would love to hear how it went! Was it easier or harder than you thought? How did God change your heart over the 40 days?
